Harijan Sewak Sangh (Iswar Saran Ashram), the ancestral institution of the College was established in the year 1933 by Late Munshi Iswar Saran Ji (26 August 1874-1 January, 1947). The basic motivating goal and mission of this institution is to eradicate the discrimination based on caste, class and community prevalent in the Indian Society and to provide a momentum towards the road to reconstruction, development and modernization of the nation.
To fulfil this aim and acknowledging education as an important medium for it, Iswar Saran Ashram established many educational institutions. In this series, Iswar Saran Degree College, established in 1970, is animated with the basic goal and spirit of the founder and its ancestral institution. The Institution is specially committed to the fulfilment of the desire for higher education of the nation's youth in general and with special emphasis for the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, the neglected and marginalised sections of the society who have been denied social justice. At present the college offers courses from undergraduate to Ph.D.
The operation of the institution is to function as a workshop of the development of healthy, virtuous and skilled youth conforming to the needs of the nation. Here, apart from bookish knowledge, there is special approach and insistence on practical skills. Education in conformation with moral values and high humanistic ideals and goals is promoted along with the practice of self-study and collective thinking.

Iswar Saran Degree College, a premier constituent college of the University of Allahabad came into existence in 1970 under the aegis of Harijan Sewak Sangh founded by late Munshi Iswar Saran, a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi. The bonding and association of late Munshi Ji with Mahatma Gandhi was so strong that he visited the campus twice which accorded the heritage significance to our institution.

Later on, as a tribute to its founder, the society was renamed as Iswar Saran Ashram. In its initial phase, the Arts Faculty started with ten subjects but within a couple of years two more subjects– Medieval and Modern History and Philosophy were also included. The successful growth and development of the institution encouraged the management to approach the University to seek affiliation for B.Com which was sanctioned in 1976.

Science Faculty with B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science was added in 1994. The college gradually and steadily expanded its horizon by introducing B.Sc. in Bio–groups in the year 2000 followed by various other certificate courses. This enabled the institute to develop more effectively the human resource required to face the future challenges and concerns of the country and contribute to society in general.
